Development Grant Writer

Department:  Development
Location: Virtual (telework from home), preferably based in the San Francisco Bay Area or Washington, D.C. Metro areas
Reports to: Director of Development
Part time, 20 hours per week

The Grant Writer works with the Development team to support the fundraising activities and goals of the organization. This position will primarily manage WCC’s grant applications, Letters of Inquiry (LOI) to prospective grant-makers, grant reporting, prospect research, and entry of grant information in the organization’s CRM database.

Key Job Functions:

  • Responsible for conducting the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and corporate sources.
  • Perform prospect research on foundations and corporations to evaluate prospects for corporate and foundation grants.
  • Work with Director of Finance and Administration to gather information necessary to report to corporate/foundation funders on current grant programs.
  • Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/corporate donors.
  • Provide stewardship to current donors, including work with Communications Manager to provide regular written updates (newsletters, social media) to corporate and foundation donors.
  • Maintain current records in CRM donor database, including grant tracking and reporting.
  • Working with the Director of Mission Based Trauma Recovery (MBTR) and Director of Dog Programs, track statistics relevant to development and provide department with written materials necessary for donor stewardship.
  • Assist with other fundraising projects as requested Manage Development database in CRM system, and electronic donor files.
  • May include some travel and meetings with prospects to further inform LOI and proposal development.

Required Experience, Skills, Background

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in nonprofit development and fundraising.
  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, writing or similar field.
  • Strong written communication skills; ability to write clear, structured, articulate, and persuasive proposals. Strong editing skills, attention to detail, and ability to meet deadlines.
  • Experience with proposal writing and institutional donors.
  • Experience with identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donors.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ability to produce high-quality work on deadline; comfortable managing multiple projects, priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Flexibility with work schedule in support of deadlines and events.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience and/or comfort working in a virtual environment.
  • Commitment to the highest standards of professionalism.

Desired Experience, Skills, Background

  • Familiarity with the military community.
  • Experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems.
  • Familiarity with Google and electronic file sharing applications.
