Service Dog Training Instructor

Department: Mission Based Trauma Recovery
Location: Washington, D.C. Metro Area
Reports to: Director of Mission Based Trauma Recovery
Full time (40-50 hours M-F), some evening and weekend hours
All members of Service Dog Program staff are on call for after-hour dog emergencies 24 hours a day on a rotating schedule.

The Service Dog Training Instructor is part of a team responsible for the care, management and training of puppies and dogs within the WCC program. The Training Instructor will be expected to work directly with and lead training groups for Veterans, VA clinical staff, and volunteer puppy raisers to consistently uphold the mission and standards of WCC and Assistance Dogs International.

Required Experience, Skills, Background

  • At least two (2) years of professional dog training.
  • Previous experience as an instructor/teacher preferred with comfort in leading one-to-one or group training sessions
  • Ability to instruct apprentice trainers, volunteers, VA staff, and Veterans on WCC training methodology and problem solving
  • Ability to pass background check for clearance to work on Federal property
  • Knowledge of and ability to implement effective training methods, problem solving and instruction for all phases of training (puppy through graduate training)
  • Possess a valid driver’s license, working vehicle and insurance
